David Teuschler is the Chief Horticulturist for Devil Mountain Wholesale Nursery. He established the nursery’s propagation program and directs the propagation and inventory teams for the company’s ten locations. David has worked in the nursery industry for three decades, including many years at Valley Crest Tree Company. While there, he served as Plant Health Care Manager for the Specimen Tree Division, Account Manager in the Estate Gardens Division, and, most notably, Chief Arborist for the Apple contract grow, responsible for growing over 7,000 trees – half from seed – for installation at the Apple campus in Cupertino, CA. David is a Certified Arborist and a member of the Western Chapter of the I.S.A. and the I.P.P.S. He is a 3rd generation Californian and has a BS in Ornamental Horticulture from California State University, Fresno.

Dave Muffly has been planting trees (especially oaks) in the Bay Area and other California locations for more than thirty years. Dave began his tree career where he received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, Stanford University. Moving from engineering to ecology, Dave managed native oak tree planting and maintenance with the non-profit Magic, in a project that has yielded more than four thousand established oaks in forty years. Dave then branched into fruit trees, and urban tree plantings, with a special focus on street trees. Dave subsequently became a Board Certified Master Arborist, and designed the award-winning 101 Freeway Soundwall planting, as part of the East Palo Alto Tree Initiative, led by the non-profit Canopy. This radical thousand-tree drought and climate change adaptation planting succeeded far beyond expectations, and helped lay the foundation for the changes reverberating through the California tree nursery industry today. The East Palo Alto Tree Initiative became the proof of concept for the even more radically diverse plantings at Apple Park in Cupertino, where Dave spent seven years as Apple's Senior Arborist. While there, Dave oversaw the acquisition and planting of nearly ten thousand trees - ranging from saplings to sixty foot oaks and one hundred foot redwoods. Today Dave works as an independent tree scientist, arborist, and ecologist at Oaktopia. www.oaktopia.org

Dr. Matt Ritter is a botany professor in the Biological Sciences Department at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California, where he studies California’s native plants and trees in the urban forest. He’s the author of several fiction and non-fiction books, including the best selling guide to California’s flora, California Plants: A Guide to our Iconic Flora (www.pacificstreetpublishing.com). He also wrote the funniest and best-selling guide to California’s urban forest, A Californian’s Guide to the Trees among Us (Heyday, 2011). He won the Cal Poly’s Distinguished Teaching Award and the International Society of Arboriculture Award for Excellence in Education. He’s an avid woodworker, mason, and gardener.

Organized by

Located at the base of its namesake Mount Diablo, Devil Mountain Wholesale Nursery was established in 1995 to find and procure any plants necessary for customers’ design specifications, and to expand the limited plant and tree palette available to landscape architects, designers, and contractors. Devil Mountain evolved from solely brokering plants to also growing plants in its quest to meet customer needs and maintain top quality. The acquisition of BrightView Tree Company in 2020 enhanced Devil Mountain’s availability of quality grown trees and marked the company’s expansion to Southern California. Today, Devil Mountain serves as a single-source provider for landscape professionals across California from its ten nursery locations.
